Q&A: I’m familiar with ‘Closed Captioning’. Is there such a thing as ‘Open Captioning’?

Posted on January 24, 2019

Question from Lisa Y.:  I was eating dinner in the restaurant the other day and they were showing a ball game on a wall-mounted TV.

The game was being broadcast with Closed Captioning on.

That got me to to wondering if there’s such a thing as “Open Captioning”. Is there?

Q&A: What’s the difference between a ‘Tidal Wave’ and a ‘Tsunami’?

Posted on January 20, 2019

Question from Barbara F.:  I was watching the news a while back and they said a Tsunami had completely destroyed a village and killed a bunch of people.

As they were interviewing people about it someone mentioned that this was one of the worst tidal waves ever. The reporter told her this wasn’t a tidal wave. He said it was actually a tsunami.

I always thought tidal waves and tsunamis were the same thing, but I guess not.

So what’s the difference between a tsunami and a tidal wave?

Q&A: Why did NASA’s Space Shuttle astronauts switch from orange spacesuits to white ones after they got into space?

Posted on January 14, 2019

Question from Carol P.:  Back when the space shuttles were going up I remember seeing the astronauts always walk out to board the shuttle wearing orange spacesuits.

But then when they went on space walks they always wore a white space suit.

I’ve always wondered why they didn’t just wear the same spacesuits all the time instead of always switching to the white ones before they left the spacecraft?

Q&A: How can Publisher’s Clearing House afford to give away all that money?

Posted on January 10, 2019

Question from Laura M.:  For years I’ve been seeing commercials for Publishers Clearing House trying to get you to enter their sweepstakes.

Not all that long ago they used to say you could win $10 million dollars if you entered their sweepstakes and won.

But lately they’ve been saying you could win $5,000 per week for the rest of your life and someone you designate would get $5,000 per week for the rest of their life after you pass away.

I have two questions about this that I’ve been dying to ask:

1 – Are the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes legit?

2 – If so, where do they get all that money to pay the sweepstakes winners?
